Once you have studied to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), your career in the field of nursing has just started, and there is a far way to go if you choose to also do some of the many specialized programs for LPNs. The only thing in your way of going right to the top of the nursing career ladder is you yourself. There are various specialized programs for LPNs that will improve your career, provide opportunities for advancement and salary increases.

There is a need for Licensed Practical Nurses wherever patient care is required, and they can either continue to practice as an LPN, study further to become a Registered Nurse (RN) or follow another track and do some specialized programs for LPNs, of which there are in excess of 60 available, according to the Mayo clinic. Most LPNs start off their careers in hospitals, long-term facilities or clinics, and do the basic patient-care tasks such as taking down patient histories, taking vital signs, monitoring patients’ reactions to medication, assisting patients with their personal grooming, and generally seeing to their personal comfort.

Choosing to do one or more of the specialized programs for LPNs will make your foray in the world of nursing much more exciting, and will make you much more marketable to prospective employers; apart from the additional skills that you will gain from the specialized programs, doing them will also prove that you are passionate and dedicated about your career, which is what employers are looking for. There are many specialized programs for LPNs and the best way for you to decide which one or more you should do is to take stock of which field interests you most; if you enjoy working with babies then perhaps you should do a course in Pediatrics; if you have a soft spot for the elderly then I would suggest that you do a Geriatrics course; if you prefer to work one-on-one, then perhaps a Home Health Care program would suit you.

Some of the most popular specialized programs for LPNs are:

Cardiology: Patients with heart conditions

Critical Care: Patients are in critical condition and often require advanced medical care

Emergency Care: Patients require immediate attention

Geriatrics: Patients are 65 years or older

Home Health Care: Patients receive treatment from the comfort of home

Neonatology: Newborns under 28 days of age

Oncology: Patients with cancer

Pediatrics: Infants and children up to 18 years of age

The following are just a few more of the specialized programs for LPNs that are available:

LPN Hospice Certification

An LPN Hospice Certification is one of the specialized programs for LPNs that trains a Licensed Practical Nurse to care for those in the end-stages of their life. People are living longer and longer and therefore need nursing care longer, but there are also young and old individuals that are in need of care in their last days on earth, and who need dedicated, compassionate nursing to ease their transition. There is currently in excess of 2 000 hospices in the United States, and more than a million individuals who require palliative care.

Hospice versus Palliative Care

Hospice Care – Hospice care is given to patients who are in the end-stages of a terminal illness, and who a medical doctor has determined will not benefit from medical treatment. Hospice care essentially means that an LPN cares for the patient either in the comfort of their own homes or in an institution and helps to ease their pain and suffering, allowing them to spend their last days on earth in peace and pain-free and to die with dignity.

Palliative Care – Palliative care is given to patients who have life-threatening illnesses but who can still have some life-expectancy if given palliative care. This type of care focuses on the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs and expectations of the patient, and could include aggressive forms of treatment.

Palliative and Hospice Nurses also provide support to the families of their patients, helping them to accept what is happening and keeping them informed as to what is transpiring with their loved one. The fact that the LPN is providing their loved one with end-of-life care and assisting them to live without pain and die with dignity also gives the family peace of mind.

LPN Pharmacology Certification

This is one of the popular specialized programs for LPNs, and one that is more than likely to increase your salary and make you more marketable. This type of certification shows commitment to the field of nursing and many employers will even sponsor an LPN for the pharmacology certification in exchange for them working for said employer for an agreed period of time.

This program is a mark of excellence that has allowed thousands of LPNs to gain a national, post-licensure credential, the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Services (NAPNES) Certification in Pharmacology (NCP), and has been around since the mid 1960s.

LPNs who have gained their NCP will, apart from the normal LPN duties, also:

Give injections and enemas

Dress wounds

Give alcohol rubs and massages

Monitor patients for adverse reactions to treatments or any medication and report any to the RN or attending doctor

Monitor Patients’ catheters

Record fluid and food intake and output

LPNs that have successfully completed the program and certification exams are entitled to use the designation LPN, NCP in their signature/title.

Certification in Long-Term Care

Certification in Long-Term Care, generally referred to as CLTC, is another of the specialized programs for LPNs. This is a comprehensive program that covers the entire lifespan from the cradle to the grave for the chronically ill. NAPNES Long Term Care Certification has replaced what used to be the NAPNES Gerontology Certification program, and is a far more comprehensive program.

The Long Term Care Certification covers excellence in nursing for all age groups, which means that individuals who obtain this certification can care for babies, toddlers, seniors and any patient in-between that requires long-term care for a chronic illness. Licensed Practical Nurses who have completed this program and passed the certification examination can use the designation LPN CLTC, which serves to inform employers that that you are engaged in skill-building and possess the necessary knowledge in long-term care.

Ambulatory Care Nursing

Ambulatory care nursing is another of the specialized programs for LPNs which is very popular with those who like to work in outpatient settings where they will be required to make quick focused assessments of patients, deal with high volumes of patients and issues that are not predictable.

Ambulatory care nurses are often called on to teach the patients and/or their family how to do certain activities that will assist the patient to recuperate quicker, and therefore often foster long-term relationships patients and their families. Ambulatory care spans all populations and includes wellness to preventative care, illness care, and hospice or palliative care.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

This is one of the specialized programs for LPNs that requires the LPN to acquire a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a related bachelor’s degree in order to be eligible to apply to the program.

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist works as a part of a team, alongside other medical professionals such as dentists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, podiatrists, or ophthalmologists, and often operates in rural areas where they provide much-needed services to the traditionally medically-underserved.

CRNAs provide pain-management services, deliver local, general or regional anesthesia, administer intravenous sedation, administer anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures, monitor patients recovering from anesthesia, conduct pre-anesthetic evaluations, provide pain relief therapy, give drugs or fluids, and provide ventilator support if necessary.

Perioperative Licensed Practical Nurse

If you are looking to do some specialized programs for LPNs and are interested in surgery, then this is one program which bears looking into. The Perioperative Nursing for Licensed Practical Nurses program is designed for LPNs who are interested in pursuing a career in surgical nursing.

Perioperative nurses provide support and care support to patients before, during, and after surgery. They are also responsible for monitoring the patient during surgery, maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room, and providing care throughout the process.

Forensic Nursing

If you are interested in not only caring for victims of crime, but also working with a legal team, assist police investigations, collecting forensic evidence connected to crimes, and providing consultation services to courts, law agencies and other medical personnel, then Forensic nursing is one of the most interesting specialized programs for LPNs that you could do.

A Forensic Nurse spends most of their time in a laboratory, but also travels to prisons, hospitals, various crime scenes, police departments and morgues.

There are various categories of forensic nurses:

Correctional Nursing Specialist

Forensic Psychiatric Nurse

Forensic Clinical Nurse Specialist

Forensic Nurse Investigator

Forensic Gerontology Specialist

Nurse Coroner

Legal Nurse Consultant

Sexual Assault Nurse

Advanced Education In Orthopaedics For LPNs

This is a post-diploma advanced certificate program that imbues LPNs with the knowledge and skills required for a specialized career in orthopaedics. This program serves to further an LPN’s understanding of physiology and anatomy with regards to orthopaedics and orthopaedic radiology, assessment, and trauma, and includes specialized orthopaedic procedures, including casting.

The program consists of two courses and a clinical practicum and upon completion of this program an LPN will be equipped to work in a cast room, an orthopaedic patient care area, and an emergency room.

There are many other short specialized programs for LPNs, including:

Urinary Catheterization and Bladder Irrigation – This is a 30 hour, 2 credits program that is designed to provide a licensed practical nurse with the knowledge and skill required to safely insert, maintain, and remove a urinary catheter; safely care for a client requiring intermittent or continuous bladder irrigations; basic knowledge on caring for suprapubic catheters and the care of the catheter site of a client with peritoneal dialysis.

Mental Health Nursing for LPNs – This is a 60 hour, 4 credits program that teaches LPNs to examine care based on best-evidence related to clients and their families whilst they are adjusting to changes in functioning associated with mental health issues and related treatments. The program builds on previous knowledge and related theory in adapting the nursing approach to the health promotion and care of mental health patients and their families. The course includes a 2-day observation experience in a mental health environment.

Wound Care: Using a Standard Approach – This is a 30 hour, 2 credits program that is designed to provide the LPN with advanced knowledge and skills in wound management. Once an LPN has completed this course they will be in a position to work in a leadership role and apply the principles of wound healing in various settings.

Infusion Therapy for Nurses – This is a 45 hour, 4 credits program that builds on an LPN’s previous knowledge with practices based on best evidence in intravenous therapy, infusion therapy, care of central lines, subcutaneous infusion therapy (hypodermoclysis), medication administration, and blood transfusions. The program includes a laboratory component during which students will apply new theories and practice nursing skills related to infusion therapy, including IV cannula insertion.

Nasogastric Tube Insertion – This is a 15 hour, 1 credit program that teaches an LPN the knowledge and skills necessary to safely insert, maintain, and remove a nasogastric tube, the use of nasogastric tubes for tube feedings and oral medication administration, nursing assessments and the roles and responsibilities of the LPN in relation to nasogastric intubation.

Whichever of the specialized programs for LPNs you decide to do, you will find that the knowledge that you gain, together with the esteem that another qualification gives you is well worth the effort, and will also open up many new avenues to you, so pick specializations that you will enjoy and have fun while you learn and earn.

Becoming a Licensed Practicing Nurse is not an easy journey with the amount of studying and clinical hours you will need to complete, but at the end of the day it will be worth it. Of course, your next step on the corporate medical ladder would be to make the transition to becoming a Registered Nurse or RN. Too many LPNs do not make that progression though because they do not have the time to take that next step. However, if you are determined to become an RN, you can fast track your progress.

The decision to study to become an RN is usually based on one of two factors. The first reason has to do with money, as RNs are more highly paid. The second is that it gives you more opportunities in the future as many RNs can specialize to work in certain situations and become any type of nurse from cardiovascular to anesthetizing nurse. As an LPN you will eventually get to the point where you really cannot advance any further, while as an RN you can keep advancing.

One of the best ways to make your dreams come true is to study online. After all, if you are already trying to balance work and a family, you may only be able to fit in a program that you can complete on your own time. These online programs aim to help you become an RN as quickly as possible and prepare you for the NCLEX exam.

Why Become An RN?

It seems that there is a lot of pressure on LPNs to fast track their careers and you may be wondering why it is so important. As many LPNs have already discovered, the career path of an LPN is quite limited. Once you reach the top of the corporate ladder, you will realize that you are not very high at all. The next step is to become an RN, and there are many benefits to doing this:

The money – when you become an RN, you will make a lot more money. However, this is not just about money, but the potential to make more money. As you advance as an RN, and start taking on more responsibilities and specializing in certain fields, you will start making a lot more money, or will at least have the option to do so.

More responsibility – we all know that with more work comes more responsibility, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. When you are given a chance to take on more responsibility and perhaps even manage staff, you are setting yourself up for promotions and potentially, being rewarded.

More knowledge – though it may not be high on your list to become a lifelong learner, studying to become an RN will give you a lot more knowledge and may even encourage a love for learning. What it will doubtless do for you is provide you with new knowledge that will help you not only do your job better, but also help you make better decisions.

It’s not that hard – when you already have an LPN qualification, making the transition to RN is not only easy, but requires a lot less work than you might need to put in if studied to become an RN from scratch.

When doing the coursework online, you will find that many of the courses offered are not easy, and rightly so. They include all aspect of nursing, from surgical and anesthesiology to pediatric and psychological nursing. This is because the responsibilities of the RN are so much more than those of the LPN and depending on which specialty you choose, you will need to be prepared.

Many candidates may be looking for the schools that can offer them the best theoretical educations, but it also vital that you find the school that can give you clinical training. Once you have enrolled, either in an online program or in classes at a physical university, you will need to complete clinical coursework, and this includes the RN nursing training. Many candidates can complete this training within their own workplace under the supervision of their managers.

What you need to be wary of is that these RN programs are not for everyone. Though you may want to fast track your education and your career, you may find these courses too intense, and in this case, should take some time to consider whether being an RN is what you really want.

Where To Study

Choosing a school to do your fast track program should be a long and considered decision. You need to determine if the school you have chosen suits your needs and if it can provide you with the type of education that will prepare you for the world of work. Some of the best schools include:

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Department of Nursing – this program specializes in fast tracking nurse’s education and training so that they can become qualified as RNs. They also give credit for any experience or previous training, so it will be much easier and faster to obtain your RN degree. One of the college’s biggest advantages is that students can keep working while they study, which means they won’t suffer depletion in income. To apply, students will need to submit their licenses as LPNs in the state of Oklahoma, and a copy of their scores from the American College Testing facility.

Florida Gateway College – this program has been specifically designed on the principles of what LPNs and RNs have in common. Though two entrance tests will need to be completed, candidates will be happy to note that their current experience counts significantly to the qualification offered. Their part time program can be completed within one year.

Lawrence Memorial/Regis College – with a current LPN license, students will need three reference letters to apply to this college, though these are easy enough to get from supervisors at the candidate’s workplace. They should also submit an essay and must have achieved a C in algebra. All of these requirements ensure that only those possessing the highest skills set can enter this program and advance to an Associate of Science degree with a specialization in nursing.

Indiana State – this school offers students the option of studying online. This is ideal for those candidates who have to work while they study and will take into account credits from previous courses and accomplishments.

The College Network – this network actually consists of a partnership between several organizations and colleges and provides students with an online program that they can use to prepare for their licensing.

The schools listed herein are some of the good ones, but you will find that within the state you are currently working and online, there are many other programs. To ensure you choose the right one, you need to check on the college’s registration details and their accreditations with national bodies.

Career Choices For The RN

If you have decided to become an RN and you are already an LPN, you will need to consider how you will specialize. This means figuring out where you will work and the courses you will take to further your career. There are many options open to you, each requiring its own sets of skills and knowledge and each taking your career in a different direction.

Some of the more popular choices include going into school care, mental health nursing or cardiovascular nursing, however, there are many options that are not that well known, such as forensic nursing. The similarity in each of these is that they will add a few years onto your study time, depending how much coursework and clinic work is required with each.

When you are making up your mind about which path to pursue, you need to get some advice from others, including your academic advisors. They can help you identify your strengths and define what you are interested in, so that you can make the best decision. It may be difficult to do this, but it is vital if you want your career to keep progressing.

When considering whether or not to fast track your career path from LPN to RN, you may need to take some time to consider the possible advantages and disadvantages. When you first consider it, make up a list of benefits and drawbacks of fast tracking your career, and think through how this type of study could affect your life, both in a positive and a negative way.

Online

Go online and look for forums where people discuss their careers in nursing and how fast tracking their LPN to RN journey has assisted them in their lives and their careers. They should be able to offer you tips on the best places to study, the places to avoid and how to ensure that you make the most of your studies. You may even be able to find out the best places to get financial aid, if you need it.

You should also ask your advisors to recommend places of study and help you make a better decision about your studies. You can ask friends and family too, but it makes more sense to ask co-workers, especially those who actually are RNs and can tell you about how they made the transition.

You will also need to consider the resources you have that you can use to study, namely, time and money. You may want to advance your career, but may realize that you don’t actually have the finances to do so, or that your schedule is so tight that you cannot fit in becoming an RN. When considering a school, think through how these challenges can be overcome. For example, if you find that you don’t have the time to study, you might look at doing an online course, which will save you a lot of time. You will be able to work and earn money, while also studying.

If you find that the biggest problem is that you cannot afford to study, look to the financial aid offices of the schools you are applying to. They may be able to help you with financial aid, or refer you to someone who can help you. They may also be able to direct you to a bank that can offer you a lower interest rate, so that you don’t end up paying a huge amount for your studies. You may also consider asking your employer to fund your studies, which will take the financial burden off of you. This is a win-win situation as you will benefit from what essentially is free studies, while your employer will have a more skilled employee.

Though you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of information there is available about becoming an RN and may feel as though it is too much to comprehend, remember that the most important thing driving you should be your goal. If your goal is becoming an RN and you want to fast track your LPN to RN studies, you will need to set yourself a goal. Ensure that when you do so, your goal is not just about money, but that you have considered the healthy balance of more money with the benefits of more responsibility too.

Once you have decided on your goal, you will need to determine how you will work towards it and though this may seem overwhelming, when you have a clear plan to follow, you can make your journey easier. Fast tracking your LPN to RN progress is a task that may not come easily and that may take time to implement, but in that time you will find that your decision becomes easier and easier, and that your goal comes closer, and more within your reach.

If you can complete this course with a friend, or with someone you work with, it will make it both easier and it will seem to go faster. If you have to complete it alone, remember the goal you are aiming for.

When using the term BOCES, you are referring to the Boards of Cooperative Education Services. What this means, in layman’s terms, and for those hoping to pursue the LPN profession, is that in the state of New York, BOCES schools are those with a certain reputation to uphold. This reputation is one that the schools wish to uphold and this means that they need to be accountable and efficient while also embracing the spirit of municipal sharing of information and this is what makes a BOCES LPN program so efficient.

If you are studying to become an LPN and you want to attend a BOCES school, what you are subscribing to is a program that makes use of shared education. BOCES schools, by focusing on keeping their costs low through collaboration assist communities with lower taxes. So for an LPN, this means that you benefit from a wealth of knowledge at a lower cost. Of course, not everyone can get into an LPN program at a BOCES school, so having some kind of background in the field, and knowing a little bit more about what this type of training entails is vital.

Why Should You Attend A BOCES School To Become An LPN?

Signing up for a BOCES LPN program involved first determining if you want to be an LPN. An LPN or Licensed Practical Nurse is very much in demand no matter what state you live in, though the BOCES programs are restricted to New York. When you choose to become an LPN, you will have to undertake training and any good school will teach you:

Anatomy and physiology – you have to know the structure of the human body to be able to treat its ailments and this means understanding how the body works and why it functions as it does. Learning this also helps you with diagnosis in situations where there is no doctor present and can help in the care of infants and babies.

Neo-natal care – being able to care for babies is an important part of the BOCES LPN program as is learning obstetrics and how to care for pregnant women. This is vital for those institutions where no midwife is available and the LPN has to assist with births.

Medical-surgical – in both the field of patient care and assisting in surgeries, a nurse has a duty to care for patients in a way that is knowledgeable, and thus learning these skills is also important.

Nutrition and first aid – both within a hospital and in other environments, part of an LPN’s responsibilities includes being able to advise people on how to improve their health, and assisting them with smaller injuries or problems.

Pharmacology, which gives you the tools you need to medicate and assist patients with their medication.

Any BOCES school for LPN will be held accountable to the same standards as other schools and thus LPNs will be required to pass the national exams or NCLEX-PN. This is a test developed by the State to ensure that an LPN, like any healthcare provider, has the right skills and knowledge to deal with people’s health effectively and efficiently. To prepare students for this test, a BOCES school needs to have the right information and way of dispersing it, and this can be tough considering their limited budgets. However, for those students who get into these schools,

BOCES LPN Program At Schools

Generally a BOCES nursing program will include a year’s worth of study followed by practical training. These programs can cost a lot of money and this may not be money that LPN students have. Though financial aid is available, it makes sense to work towards an LPN degree at a BOCES school where the costs are lower and the information more readily available.

When studying at a BOCES school, you may have to complete courses such as practical nursing so that you get the basics of what your job will entail. This includes learning about illnesses and promoting general wellness through nutrition and exercise. A course such as this will also teach students about the ethics and legal issues inherent in becoming a practical nurse. Pharmacology is another large part of the course, since an LPN is responsible for administering medications and being able to advise patients on the types of medications they should and shouldn’t be using.

LPN programs at BOCES institutions can also be divided into certificate programs and degree programs. With a certificate program, LPNs do not have to study for the length of time that degree students do, but degrees are more commonly recognized. Of course, any qualification from a recognized institution can be used by LPNs.

Why Become An LPN With A Qualification From A BOCES School?

Becoming an LPN is a career choice that can only benefit you. This profession is in demand and the demand is increasing year on year. The potential for you to make a lot of money in the long term as an LPN is huge, and if you study at the right school, a BOCES school, you are more likely to get a job when you graduate.

So how long will you be studying? Well, an LPN trainee can study anywhere from nine months to 18 months and the clinical training that then follows can take about a year. Though some schools offer training in the evening or online, so that you can continue to work while you study, this is not the case with BOCES schools. These schools require a full commitment from the student, and can help you achieve your qualification faster.

However, when it comes to payment, covering your tuition fees can seem impossible, especially when considering that you may end up paying up to about $20 000. At a BOCES school, this is not the case due to the prescribed program and education sharing, geared specifically to lowering the costs of these courses and lowering taxes paid by the community.

Once you have completed your LPN training, you may be looking for the next step, which could include studying to become an RN. You will have to move on to another college to do this, but it does give you a bigger salary at the end of the day. One thing that is important to note is that with an LPN to RN program, you have more opportunities available to you, especially if you have completed a BOCES LPN program. You can even continue your studies to become a BSM.

No matter how you choose to advance your career path after studying to become an LPN, know that your yearly salary will probably be about $35 000. This is the industry standard but as the demand for LPNs keeps rising, this could go up. If you work in a private hospital or a clinic, the salary may be even higher considering that private funds are being used to pay you, rather than government funds.

What To Do With Your BOCES Qualification

Once you become an LPN, many routes will open up to you, especially if you have attended a BOCES school. Some nurses might choose to work in the office of the medical director, while others may make their way to nursing homes. No matter what career path you choose to follow, you should ensure that you choose a program that can cater for that. A BOCES school can do that.

Attending a BOCES school could also help you get into a hospital or clinic once you complete it, and in some cases can assist you in getting jobs in home care or on private duty. Whichever of these paths you choose to follow, know that your choice of career means being on your feet for long periods and working long shifts. A good BOCES school can prepare you for this in its training and assist you with getting used to the work.

BOCES Adult Education

For those who have been on a different career path for many years, changing career can be very difficult, but many BOCES schools offer learning programs for adults too. If you are committed to BOCES LPN program, you can become an LPN no matter what age you are. The benefits of this are quite obvious, as those who have not had the education or training to pursue their goal of becoming an LPN can now do so.

Many BOCES schools do offer adult education programs structured in the same way as the programs for younger students.

What Do You Need To Do To Get Into The Program?

Taking part in a BOCES LPN program requires individuals who are committed and this means doing tests and getting high grades. This is to separate those who really deserve to do the program from those who want to complete it simply because it is a better and cheaper option than going to a conventional college.

You may also need a pre-qualification program and will definitely need to have done biology, math and English at school level. You will need to have completed your high school diploma and have certain qualifications to get into a BOCES school as they cannot admit everyone.

The Benefits Of BOCES To The Community

When you live in a community where taxes are high, especially in the boroughs of New York, it makes sense to try and reduce costs wherever possible and this is exactly what BOSEC schools do. When it comes to scarce skills such as LPN, a BOSEC school can make a big difference to the lives of those in the community. Where it can also make a difference is to the lives of the individuals involved. In any other case, they may not have the opportunity to pay for their studies as an LPN, but at a BOSEC school this does not have to be a consideration for them.

BOSEC schools are also great for students who are worried about not being able to get enough study materials. Because of the information sharing aspect of them, study materials are always available because material is disseminated to all of the BOSEC schools. This can be invaluable in a field such as LPN where technology is constantly evolving and the student needs to know what new gadgets and medicines are available.

Becoming an LPN can be a very rewarding career choice, but only if you study at an institution that recognizes the need for a lot of information and information that is valuable and viable. At a BOSEC school, students can rest assured in the knowledge that what they learn and the materials they use are correct for their studies and will help them in the long term. They also need the reassurance that comes with knowing that will not be paying the steepest fees for a course that is of the highest quality.

The BOSEC LPN program is one that encompasses learning many new skills and doing a lot of hard work before you qualify. The rewards of completing the program though, and earning your degree or certificate, are multiple, especially when you consider the high demand for LPNs and the insufficient supply. Getting into a BOSEC school though is not easy and these will have special requirements that need to be adhered to. Of course, these can be obtained from the school itself, as can financial aid if applied for.

At the end of the day, community corporations such as BOSEC have been formed to assist with educating the community and reducing the costs of this education. This is vital in a world where the population is booming but access to necessities such as education and good healthcare are not. In this situation, only a collaboration of government and private companies can remedy the situation, and this means that more cooperative organizations must get together to fund programs that encourage individuals to learn in demand skills.

For the moment, the availability of the BOSEC LPN program for individuals could change the face of the future in the long run, but in the short term helps people find jobs and make their contributions to the economy.

In Delaware, the LPN program option is a very popular way for people to become nurses. This is because it does not take a lot of time and you will be able to move on to being an RN at any point. It is a very useful stepping stone. The programs that you will be able to choose from should consist of:

Coursework, that will take around a year to complete, and

Hands-on clinical training, without which you can not be registered as an LPN

In Delaware there is an additional requirement. Students who want to become an LPN need to have a CPR card. This is something that you cannot avoid obtaining, so it is worth while embarking on a CPR course as early as possible. Remember that your CPR card has to be renewed regularly. Once you have completed your course you will have to write the NCLEX-PN examination so that you can be registered as an LPN.

Community colleges

Vocational schools

Online courses

Distance learning programs

Becoming An LPN In Delaware: Steps And Tips

There is a relatively simple process that you can follow in order to become an LPN in Delaware:

Graduate from an LPN school that is accredited by the state board of nursing of Delaware.

Complete the number of clinical hours required by the state of Delaware.

Apply to the Delaware state board of nursing for licensure with your transcript and proof of your clinical hours.

Complete all necessary requirements, such a drug screening and criminal background checks, and ensure that the state board of nursing has the results.

While you wait to write the NCLEX-PN exam, you can get a provisional license to practice as an LPN.

Register for the NCLEX-PN exam through the testing body Pearson Vue for a cost of $200.

Write and pass the exam.

There are two ways to become licensed as an LPN in Delaware that LPN programs in this state may prepare you for. These two ways are:

License by Examination, and

License by Endorsement

License by Examination: This is the method that is described above. It involves completing a program and then applying to the Delaware State Board of Nursing for licensure. You will have to send off for a transcript form your school. You will also have to pass the required background test and include the information in your application. Schedule and write the exam through Pearson Vue, and sit back and wait for your results. If you pass you will be licensed. This is the more well-known way to get your LPN license. There is, however, another option as well for LPNs from outside the state of Delaware.

License by Endorsement: The first thing that you will have to do here is to fill out the Application for Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse by Endorsement offered by the state board of nursing of Delaware along with the request for the criminal background check. Have your application notarized. You will then have to gather the following documentation:

Application form

Application fee

Copy of driver’s license or identification card

Copy of your current nursing license with signature and expiration date

Verification of original licensure by examination

Employer Reference Form from your nursing school or previous employer

This is the information that you will have to submit if you want to move from another state into Delaware and practice as an LPN there. All of this information should be sent to:

Board of Nursing
Cannon Building
861 Silver Lake Blvd., Suite 203
Dover, DE 19904-2467

The Employer Reference Form needs to be sent by your employer or the school where you completed your LPN program directly to the State board of nursing.

As you can see, LPN programs in Delaware are only part of the process you have to undergo in order to successfully become a licensed practical nurse in this particular state.

Delaware Board Of Nursing

If you are interested in embarking on one of the LPN programs offered in Delaware it is important that you know how to get hold of the state board of nursing. This is a body that will help you to:

Find LPN programs in your area

Ascertain whether or not a program is indeed accredited

Get your LPN license

Inform you of your scope of practice

Ensure that you and the program you attend adhere to the standards, policies, administrative rules and regulations required

The Delaware state board of nursing is therefore the agency that will protect you from your school should your nursing school be doing anything incorrectly or illegally. On top of that the board protects your school and your employer from anything that you may do wrong as an employee or student there. The state board is a governing agency and it is worthwhile having a working knowledge of your state board of nursing before you apply for any of the LPN programs that you are interested in.

When compared to several other states, such as Kentucky for example, Delaware simply does not have as many options. However, what the state lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. As we can see from the first section, out of all of the states, Delaware comes second in terms of the comfort experienced by the LPNs who work there. If you live in Delaware you may have trouble getting into one of the limited number of schools because of limited space issues, but if you can you will be able to work as an LPN in one of the best states for the job.

There are a number of things that need to be taken into account when looking into school. For example you need to make sure that the tuition will be of the kind that will adequately prepare you to take the NCLEX-PN examination. In addition you will need to be adequately prepared for life in the real world of nursing. A program that prepares you at a theoretical s well as at a practical level is the best to consider. Also keep cost in mind, but remember that there are a number of financial aid options in the state that you could benefit from that will help you afford LPN programs in Delaware.
