An EMT or Emergency Medical Technician is a very rewarding career if you enjoy a challenge, love doing physical work, get a kick out of helping people and are interested in things medical. EMT Training is essential for anyone wishing to become an emergency medical technician or a Paramedic.

EMTs and Paramedics are usually sent to the scene of a disaster, accident or violent assault by 911 operators, and it is their job to asses, treat and stabilize the patient or patients prior to moving them to a hospital by ambulance or helicopter. The EMT will also continue to monitor and keep the patient stable during transit.

EMT Basic Job Description

When an emergency situation such as a fire, accident, violent assault, sports injury, heart attack or stroke occurs, the first people that are usually dispatched to the scene are EMS services including First Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians and/or Paramedics.

The basic duty of the EMT is to provide initial life-saving medical care, determining the most suitable medical facility for the patient to be transported to and then transporting the patient.

The basic job description of an Emergency Medical Technician

Patient Assessment – The first thing that the Emergency Medical Technician does when they get to an emergency scene is to assess the condition of the patient. They determine the nature and the extent of the injury or medical condition (in the case of a heart attack or stroke for instance). They also check for identification, medical alert bracelets or necklaces and whether the patient is carrying any medication.

Basic Life Support – It is the duty of the EMT to provide basic life-support including ventilating the patient if necessary, airway management, applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automatic defibrillator. This includes monitoring the patient and keeping them stabilized during transit.

Additional Care – Additional pre-hospital care such as controlling any bleeding, treating the patient for shock, bandaging wounds and immobilizing broken bones may also be required in order to stabilize the patient before transporting them to a hospital.

Communication with Dispatch – The EMT stays in touch with their dispatch, keeping them apprised of the situation and requesting back-up should the situation require it.

Ambulance Maintenance – Once the patient has been handed over to the medical personnel at a hospital the EMT will ensure that the ambulance is tidied up, cleaned and disinfected if necessary and re-stocked so that it is ready for the next call.

EMTs have to undergo specific Emergency Medical Technician Training in various medical disciplines so that they are qualified to handle different emergency situations. There are different levels of emergency medical technicians and each has had different training and can perform different life-saving duties. The levels are progressive, starting at Emergency Medical Responder and progressively up to Paramedic.

It is of the utmost importance that your EMT Training is done at an accredited institution in order for you to get certified. The duration of EMT National Training Programs is between six months and four years, depending on the level of the qualification that you are doing. Graduates of Community College EMT Courses receive associates degrees, and graduates from a four-year Emergency Medical Technician Training receive a Bachelor Degree in Emergency Medical Technology.

Characteristics Of An Emergency Medical Technician

Being an EMT takes a lot out of one as the hours are long; the job is hard physically and emotionally. It is for this reason that many EMTs eventually move on to other disciplines in the EMT field. It is also for this reason that it takes a very specific type of person to follow an EMT career.

Specific skills that an EMT needs:

Active Listening – EMTs must be able to give their full attention to patients who are speaking to them as they may be trying to give pertinent information under stressful circumstances. This includes asking the right questions when and if needed.

Coordination – An EMT must be able to work in conjunction with others and change their actions in accordance to sudden changes and actions by another.

Critical Thinking – An EMT needs to be able to identify weaknesses and strengths in various approaches by applying logical thinking and analysis.

Equipment Selection – It is crucial that the EMT knows which equipment is best for a particular situation and also that they know how to use it.

Speaking – Part of an EMTs duties is to access information from a patient and to calm them down under what may be harrowing circumstances. This calls for excellent communication skills.

Emergency Medical Technician Training

Apart from first responders, who work alongside police and fire-fighters to give initial preliminary first aid to patients at emergency scenes, there are three levels of Emergency Medical Technicians; Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B), Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I), and Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic (EMT).

1. EMT Training – Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B)

An emergency medical technician needs to have an enormous amount of knowledge of the human anatomy, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and first aid, and must also be able to work well even when under pressure. EMT National Training for the EMT-B consists of a combination of EMT Training in a classroom as well as fieldwork.

Students on these certificate EMT Courses are taught the basic of emergency care such as taking vital signs, applying splints, performing physical examinations, and controlling bleeding. It is also important that EMTs learn how to deal with poisoning, heart attacks, drug abuse, fractures and burns.

Basic EMT Training teaches future emergency medical technicians how to operate oxygen equipment, stethoscopes, nasal and oral devices and extrication tools. The majority of EMT programs work with an assigned medical facility where the students complete their required 180 hours of hours of on-the-job ambulance and hospital training.

Education Prerequisites

You must be 18 years old and have a high-school diploma or GED.

You must pass a criminal background check.

You must submit your current immunization records upon enrolment in an EMT Course.

Some EMT Courses require you to have a current CPR certificate and some prior medical experience.

Program Coursework
The basic EMT National Training provides students with fundamental training on how to respond to emergency medical situations and what to monitor when they are helping someone who is injured. The EMT-Basic curriculum consists of:

Basic Emergency Medical Care

Human Anatomy

Patient Stabilization

Pharmacology

Trauma Assessment

Employment Prospects and Salary

Those who have completed their level-one training are usually employed in county fire-departments and emergency departments amongst other places.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment outlook for EMTs is favorable and is expected to grow approximately 12%.

The annual EMT salary for those with the EMT-B certification is between $22,000 and $34,000.

Professional Licensing and Continuing Education

Once you have completed the EMT National Training you can apply to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam.

The NRET examination is a computer-based test in which psychomotor and cognitive questions regarding basic emergency service care such as paediatrics, cardiology and trauma.

EMTs must be re-certified every 2 years and have to be employed to meet the continuing education requirement.

Emergency medical technicians with an EMT-Basic certification may take additional EMT Courses and complete another certification examination in order to upgrade to EMT Intermediate level.

2. EMT Training – Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate (EMT-I)

Emergency life-saving techniques such as the operation of defibrillators and shocks and advanced intubation techniques are some of the skills that are taught on the intermediate EMT National Training. Students in the EMT-Intermediate certificate program are taught how to carry out emergency care for pre-hospital patients and correctly administer intravenous medication under the supervision of a physician via demonstrations, lectures and clinical training.

These EMT Classes build on the skills that were learned on the EMT-Basic course, but students are allowed to choose a specialization such as trauma, cardiac or shock at this stage. There are two further intermediate levels, EMT-I/85 and EMT-I/99 between the EMT-Basic and the EMT-Paramedic levels, although not all states recognize all the intermediate levels. Some EMT Training programs award a technical diploma instead of issuing a certification of completion.

Education Prerequisites

You have to have an EMT-Basic certification, have worked as an EMT for at least one year.

You must be in possession of current immunization records and CPR certification in order to enrol in an Emergency Medical Technician Training program.

You may not have been found guilty of abuse, been convicted of a felony or have had your EMT license revoked or suspended.

Program Coursework
The intermediate EMT Training program builds on the fundamental training from the EMT-Basic course by giving advanced training in basic skills. The EMT-Intermediate curriculum consists of:

Administration of medication

Advanced life support

Airway management

Anatomy II

Paediatric emergencies

Employment Prospects and Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the outlook is good and the amount of jobs in the EMT field is expected to rise by 12% through 2016.

Emergency Medical Technician jobs also open up often due to EMTs leaving to pursue other fields and due to the stresses of the job.

The annual salary for those with the EMT-I certification is between $34,000 and $42,000.

Professional Licensing and Continuing Education

Both of the Intermediate exams are offered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Both are computer-based tests and make use of psychomotor and cognitive testing of skills.

EMTs need to get re-certified every two years and need to be working as an EMT in order to meet the continuing education requirement.

3. EMT Training – Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic (EMT)

The EMT-Paramedic training is the highest level of Emergency Medical Technician training and the one with the most training in emergency medical procedures. A certificated Paramedic can start an intravenous line, administer a range of medications and read an electrocardiogram.

Students who do the Para medic EMT National Training do advanced EMT Classes in assessing injury and trauma in children and the elderly, and have a far more extensive knowledge of critical care, the human body and critical care.

Education Prerequisites

Students in the EMT-Paramedic program need to gain experience working in a clinic or hospital under the direct supervision of a physician or registered nurse.

To enlist in this EMT Training applicants must have EMT certification and it must be in good standing.

Paramedic Emergency Medical Technician Training students must have extensive medical services employment and training.

Program Coursework
Those who graduate from the Paramedic EMT National Training program are also exposed to various other aspects of emergency medical care, such as legal issues and ethics. They can also do endotracheal intubations, and employ a big variety of technologically complex equipment in the discharge of their duties.

They do much more advanced training than any of the other levels and are thus responsible for far more at an emergency scene. The EMT-Intermediate curriculum consists of:

Assault and abuse

Cardiology

Communications

Facial trauma

Gastroenterology

Infectious diseases

Pathophysiology

Psychiatric disorders

Roles and responsibilities of a paramedic

Toxicology

Employment Prospects and Salary

Because of their advanced EMT Training, Paramedics are in great demand and can access employment in several fields.

Paramedics can be dispatchers, become marketing professionals for EMT equipment companies, become supervisors, or managers of emergency services.

The annual salary for those with the Paramedic certification is between $40,000 and $70,000.

Professional Licensing and Continuing Education

Once they have completed the Paramedic EMT Training, they can apply to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic certification test.

This test is computer-based and seeks to test the skills that the paramedic ahs learned, including and patient assessment, medication administration and cardiac management,

Re-certification must be done every 2 years and the Paramedics must be working and in good standing when they apply in order to fulfill the continuing education requirement.

EMT Refresher Course

EMTs need to renew their certification every few years, and they do this by doing an EMT Refresher Course. These EMT Courses are offered by hospitals and community colleges and meet the educational credential requirements for both national and state certification renewals.

EMT First Responder Refresher Course

EMT first responders work alongside fire-fighters and police officers to administer preliminary emergency medical care until more qualified medical professionals arrive.

Refresher EMT Classes review subjects such as bleeding control and stabilization of broken bones, wound care, and CPR, and covers any advances in first response care.

EMT first responder refresher courses generally consist of 16 hours of classroom instruction.

EMT-Basic Refresher Course

EMT-Basic personnel provide emergency medical care at an emergency site and can also keep a patient stabilized in an ambulance on the way to a hospital.

Students enrolled in this EMT Class are taught any updated methods of emergency medical care skills.

This EMT Course covers oxygen administration, cardiac arrest treatment, trauma management, triage and emergency childbirth delivery.

These refresher courses consist of 24-hour EMT Classes.

EMT- Intermediate Refresher Course

EMT-Intermediate is the second highest EMT level.

The refresher EMT Courses at this level cover pre-hospital care skills, including airway management and ventilation, patient assessment, needle chest decompression and advanced cardiac life support procedures and ECG interpretation.

The duration of this refresher course is 36 hours of classroom instruction.

EMT- Paramedic Refresher Course

Paramedic is the highest EMT level.

Paramedic refresher courses cover the most topics and are the longest.

This EMT Class covers the same curriculum as the lower-level EMT Courses but a paramedic refresher course delves deeper into obstetrics, paediatric, and geriatric care.

This EMT Course lasts approximately 48 hours.

The EMT Refresher Course is not only for those who need to renew their certification but also for those whose certification has expired not more than 2 years previously. One can also do an online refresher course, but always bear in mind that whichever type of Emergency Medical Technician Training you do, it must always be done through an accredited institution. You can only sit for the certification exam if the course is accredited.

One of the most renowned online EMT Refresher Courses is the U.S. Department of Transportation EMT Course, which is a 24-hour online EMT Class. The course is presented by Mark Komins B.S.E.M.S., Paramedic, of the EMS Training Institute, who has been an Emergency Medical Services Educator and Provider for more than ten years. The EMS Training Institute is CECBEMS accredited approved EMT School and a BLS & ALS Continuing Education provider for the National Registry.

The course does not have to be completed at once, but can all be done online at your own pace. This EMT Refresher Course qualifies for Instructor Based and CE Training and this will be noted on your certificate.

EMT Paramedic Training

A Paramedic is the person you see rushing around at the scene of an accident or a rescue situation whether it is as a result of an automobile accident, a climbing accident where someone is stuck in a ravine, a fire or any number of natural disasters. Paramedics need to undergo very specific training s they are the person in charge of emergency medical attention at the scene. They are the most qualified and often have to give orders to EMTs.

Paramedics usually work in a team of two people, very often with a basic level EMT. Although both of these Emergency Medical Services personnel are highly trained, the paramedic has much more training than the EMT Basic member of the team, which is why they are in charge. Paramedics have far more years of experience too, as most of them started with EMT National Training to become an EMT Basic and did the job for a few years whilst picking up experience and working their way up the ladder, doing the Intermediate EMT course first and then only going on to do the EMT Paramedic Training.

EMT Courses for paramedics are very intense programs and require that the student has strong math, science, leadership and problem-solving skills. EMT Paramedic training programs generally last 1-2 years and frequently culminate in an associate’s degree. Paramedic training is offered at technical schools, community colleges,

Requirements for EMT Paramedic Training

Applicants must be 18 years or older by course completion date.

Applicants must hold current national certification as an EMT-Basic

Applicants must be in possession of a high school diploma or a GED.

Applicants must be currently CPR certified and have Physiology and Anatomy from an accredited university or college.

EMT Course – Paramedic

The EMT-Paramedic certificate training is offered full-time and part-time, which may suit some people who would prefer to continue working whilst they are doing the course. The full-time course is two semesters and includes academic and practical studies.

The course covers:

Introduction to Advanced Practice

Anatomy & Physiology for Paramedic Practice

Assessment Based Management

Cardiology

Clinical I, II, III & IV

Emergency Pharmacology

EMS Operations

Medical Emergencies

Patient Assessment & Airway Mgmt

Special Populations

Trauma Management

Once the Paramedic EMT Classes are completed graduates need to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians paramedic exam. This exam is a 2-part test which comprises of a practical, psychomotor portion and a written, cognitive portion. Certain states may also require you to write a state exam in order to work as a Paramedic in that state. Licensure needs to be renewed every 2-3 years and this is done by earning attending refresher classes and continuing education credits.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 45% of paramedics in the US are employed by ambulatory services, and many others work in hospitals and local governments. The amount of jobs available for paramedics is projected to rise by 9% in the 2008-2018 decade.

Hopefully the above information on EMT Training was of some help to you. Now that you know what it takes to become an Emergency Medical Technician, the only thing that you have to do to take the next step is to source an accredited EMT National Training program and start your very worthy career as one of America’s heroes!

Proficiency in any field of expertise is essential for not only success and furthering ones career, but also for the obvious and logical reasons. For something as critical as the Emergency medical technician services, reasons for proficiency reveal themselves to be quite obvious, the most glaring of which is that many lives could be lost without it. The variety of EMT practice tests is to prepare you for the NREMT test, which is essential to prove not only to the state, but to oneself as well, that you are in fact capable of such a job with the monumental responsibilities it comes with. It’s understandably like this with all staff working in the medical field that is responsible for the treatment and care of human life.

The test for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is rightfully not an easy one by any stretch of the imagination and many applicants do not pass it on the first try. Thus, a clear and concise method of study is required if one intends to pass it in the first attempt. There are many online practice tests allowing one the adequate preparation to cope with whatever the real deal offers up; these practice exams are specifically designed to enhance your chances of success with the NREMT test. EMT test questions may vary and most good practice tests make ample allowances for this very scenario. All in all, a pass on the EMT test should be made that much more achievable with this method of practice and preparation.

The Role Of The EMT Practice Test

As with any practice test, the purpose of which is to prepare you for an upcoming exam. In this instance the EMT practice test is available to not only aid studies, but also to assess how well prepared you already are, or how much more work is still required. Since there are two main sections of the test (theory and practical), and each section has its own sub categories, therein lies a great propensity to have stronger and weaker sections (since we all do better at different things), so the practice test allow the individual to gauge which area needs more attention since one cannot afford to have any weaknesses.
Unlike other tests one may encounter in life, the EMT test is not graded and is simply a pass/fail exam, thus each section needs to be of a certain high standard. Needless to say the more practice tests one takes the better your chances for passing, especially on the first NREMT test attempt. Though the EMT test covers many sections and categories, the EMT is obviously required to be well proficient in every single one of them without any deficiencies.

What Can Be Expected From An EMT Practice Test?

Included in any good EMT practice test should be the following list of areas:

Custom or personalized EMT questions:

practical paramedic training

concomitant assistance with your test preparation

EMT training

EMS training

These are the primary areas focused on, among others, to aid you in passing your NREMT exam.

The NREMT Test

The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician test is the exam which, if passed, certifies you as a base level EMT. It is essentially a test consisting of two main sections; a computerized multiple choice section as well as a demonstration orientated practical section wherein one exhibits ones EMT skills. The whole test lasts about two hours and the minimum pass mark is 85%. Crucial though is that one not only studies well for the exam but that the knowledge and skills obtained are not only proficiently recalled and demonstrated, but that they are retained and refined in future.

A note to any aspiring EMT who are about to take or study to take the NREMT test is that they inevitably vary from year to year, thus older models of tests from years gone by – perhaps obtained from a local library – may well be outdated. Of course, as mentioned before, the multiple choice section of the test is computerized so the online method of gaining examples for an adequate EMT test prep, is most likely the best route since many companies release these practice tests online, further acquainting you with the examination method.

Crucial points to ponder when considering which practice test is most suitable are the following:

The Date

Format

Memorandum

Is the test up to date with the latest regulations and practices? Does the format match that of the actual EMT test, as in four choice answers (the conventional multiple choice exam)? And does it come with a clear and concise answer sheet with understandable explanations?

The Extent of the EMT Practice Tests

There is a variety of specified tests to take, each with their own follow ups. In other words each test category comes with a part one, two and three. The list of EMT practice test categories looks as follows:

Airways and breathing

Trauma

Cardiology

Medical

Operations

These are the fundamentals which each EMT test is based upon. Once your preparation and practice is over and you’ve passed your NREMT test, and are a certified EMT, you’ll be required to pass regional licensure and certification exams.

The Various Certification Levels

As mentioned before, passing the NREMT test qualifies and certifies you as a Base-EMT but there are further levels. The Emergency Medical Technician is considered the entry (or one of the entries) into the medical field of work and study. The levels of the EMT certification are:

EMT basic

First responder

EMT Intermediate

Paramedic

These certification levels also determine the level of pay, with level appropriate salaries.

Preparation For The Test

Preparing for any test can be stressful, and usually is, thus we all have our own ways of dealing with it. In addition to that we all have our own way of studying and preparing ourselves mentally and physically – a vital aspect considering that the EMT test involves both the intellectual and the practical. We all also use our own study methods, sometimes changing methods as the subject or category changes; in any case, there is bound to be an online EMT practice test that suits your needs and your methods to give you the best chance in the exam.

What Are Customized EMT Test Questions?

As with any subject or field, the EMT test has many facets and sections and with every individual that comes along, comes different struggles. Considering all the various parts to the Emergency Medical technicians role, one can understand that individual might have trouble with a singular aspect, thus a number of EMT training online tests are available where you can gain customized EMT questions to focus on a specific area – the area that requires the most attention for you. Often it can be just one section, or section within a category that can cause trouble and subsequent failure. Thus, one is able to acquire customized EMT test questions where you can adjust practice tests to heavily favor a subject that troubles you, or have a test that only focuses on one topic.

The Importance Of Being A Emergency Medical Technician

So, why an EMT? Well as mentioned, the technician is regarded as the base level entry into the medical field and provides the fundamentals and the ideal foundation for anyone wanting to further their career by later becoming a nurse, medical assistant, paramedic, surgical or physician assistant, or in some cases, even a doctor. What the EMT course does, is give the individual not only the tools to do their job well, but also allows those who are not certain of their future within the medical field, to gauge whether or not there is a future to be had. Many volunteers adopt this approach, using the EMT course and subsequent experience to gain a deeper level of understanding to aid in their decision-making. Knowing how important this, and all associated fields are, and the huge responsibilities they come with, it’s not surprising that a considerable amount of thought needs to be put into it, to decide on the level of commitment without having to invest too much.

Whatever your decision, the EMT remains an invaluable role, the need for which will only increase. Of course what makes the course more attractive is that you’d be doing a valuable service once certified, and if down the line you decide that the medical fraternity and you, are not compatible, you can opt out at little cost, whilst always retaining the invaluable skills learned – and form an impressive feature on your resume should you opt out. Either way, the EMT test need not be too big of a challenge with the aid of the number of online EMT practice tests, which is said to be able to equip you with the resources to pass the test with relative or consummate ‘ease’.

The most important goal of the national registry EMT is to provide staff that are fully qualified and able to assist patients when most needed. The EMT national registry is the recognized institute that EMT personnel will have to sit exams and qualify through. It will teach staff to understand what is involved in treating patients in and out of hospitals.

These qualified staff will need to perform very important duties when assisting patients and the national EMT registry will ensure they are more than capable. Such an important role an EMT worker has that strict qualifications and guidelines must be adhered to. The national registry of emergency medical technicians was founded in 1970 and was recommended by the committee on highway traffic safety. This committee proposed a national certification agency to establish uniform standards for training and examination of personnel that are active in the delivery of emergency ambulance service.

NCCA Accreditation

Committed to service excellence the NREMT holds accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies known as the NCCA. This is connected to the National Organisation for Competency Assurance known as NOCA. The NCCA is recognized as the authority on accreditation standards for professional certification organisations and programs. This means the standards set by the NREMT have been reviewed by the NCCA and is deemed credible for ensuring the health, well-being, welfare and safety of the general public.

Information About The National Registry Of EMT

The national registry is a non-profit organisation that provides a strict standard for determining the skill and knowledge required for emergency personnel. The registry offers a centralized location for certification, re – certification and continuing education requirements. Students will be required to complete a state approved education course that involves both written and practical exams. The NREMT certifies five different levels of EMS professionals from first responders to paramedic. Re-certification is required every two years which ensures that all personnel are always competent in what they are doing. This can be through taking the exam again or continuing education. Progress is conveniently tracked and documented on the NREMT website. The registry provides computer based exams which are fair, accurate and precise. Classes can be completed online which can be very beneficial not only to the candidates but to the educators as well. Candidates will be able to choose where to sit their final exams when finished their classes. Once qualified, the registry will update their database. This will be very beneficial for the public, state licensing agencies and employers as they will easily be able to verify the candidate’s qualifications. Due to the excellent work of the national registry the US public can be assured of a consistent high standard of all emergency medical technicians.

The Different Levels Of Training

There are different levels of EMT training and qualifications. The NREMT is a comprehensive government agency that ensures through accreditation that all EMT educational institutions maintain a very high level of standard established by the law. If you decide to apply for an EMT program make sure that they are accredited to the NREMT. If not, you will be unable to apply for certification or licensing. Once you have completed the appropriate EMT education program you will then have to apply for an assessment exam before you can take any national registry EMT test. You will need to be at least 18 years old when you apply. Once you have successfully completed the assessment and depending on your EMT educational and training level, you will then be allowed to take one of the six national registry EMT tests. The NREMT will send you an authorization to test, known as an ATT. The six different examinations that are available are:

First responder – This is the first level of training. There are 80 to 100 questions in the exam and the cost of the exam is currently $65.

EMT B – This stands for basic which is the next level of training which can normally be completed within just a few months of training. A high school diploma or GED is required. The exam comprises of between 70 and 120 questions and the cost to sit the exam is $70.

EMT I – This is an intermediate level which increases levels of practice with additional training and field experience. There are between 85 and 135 questions in the exam and the cost is $100.

EMT A – This involves an advanced level of training over the intermediate exam which costs $100 to sit the exam. There are 135 questions involved.

Paramedic – Only when you have completed all the previous studies and skills are in place gained from practical and classroom experience can you become a paramedic. This is the highest level which normally takes one to two years to complete. This often results in an Associate degree. There are 80 to 150 questions involved and costs $110 to sit.

There are free EMT practice tests available to do which are a convenient way to prepare for any of the above EMT exams. These exams not only include what you have learnt, but also your ability to safely and effectively execute the tasks of an EMT. They will include such things as your ability to think, cognitive, and perform, psychomotor, in emergency situations so not to make a patient’s condition worsen. If you happen to be renewing your certification you would be required to take a refresher course according to National Registry EMT Test requirements and guidelines. This would need to be done within two years as if not you would need to complete another entire EMT course before taking your exam.

Available Jobs For A qualified EMT

There is always the need for qualified EMT’s. There are many different areas of workplaces that require dedicated and good workers. This can be in hospitals, frail care centers, hospices as well as assisting at large crowd sport and music events, schools and colleges.

People tend to forget about the need in those fields and normally just think of the more traditional jobs such as ambulance workers and fire fighters. Many EMT’s are so dedicated to assisting the sick or injured that they use this start in the health field to further their education and knowledge to springboard a move into other health care careers such as nursing, PA’s and some even continuing their education to become medical doctors.

Overview Of EMT Work

The Emergency Medical Technicians are usually the first point of contact for a patient who is unwell and need the assistance of an emergency worker. An EMT will always need to be responsible and careful as they will be handling the lives of people in need. Apart from this they will also need to be quick on their feet when answering an emergency call.

When studying to become an EMT they will learn all about essential first aid response in an emergency situation. Like medical professionals they will also undergo training on basic life support and advance cardiac support. EMT’s will be performing basic procedures according to physicians orders. All EMT’s will only be able to practice their profession once they are certified to do so. Some duties that an EMT may have to perform could include giving necessary medication, patient intubation, management of airways and giving ventilation. Depending on your rank of EMT qualification will determine what level of procedures you can perform. Only qualified paramedics can perform certain procedures. The ranking of an EMT will depend on the level of training they have done. An EMT must always upgrade because they need updated information on emergency procedures. A qualified EMT can be the difference of saving a patient’s life.

The Legal Differences Between Certification And Licensure

Many people think that these are the same. However there are important functional distinctions between the two concepts. The federal government has defined certification as the process by which a non government organisation gives recognition to an individual who has met predetermined qualifications specified by that organisation. This can be also deemed as voluntary where an individual has demonstrated the necessary level of skill and knowledge required in the profession.

The three hallmarks of certification are:

Voluntary process

By a private organisation

This is by providing the public information on individuals who have successfully completed educational and testing requirements. They would also have demonstrated their ability to perform their profession competently.

Licensure is where the state grants legal authority. Under the licensure system, states define by statute the tasks and function or scope of practice of a profession and provide that these tasks may legally be performed only be people who are licensed to do so. As such, licensure restricts anyone from practicing the profession who is not licensed, regardless of whether or not the individual has been certified by a private organisation.

In the US there is often confusion between the terms certification and licensure because many different states call their licensure processes certification, especially when they incorporate the standards and requirements of private certifying bodies in their licensing statues and require that an individual be certified in order to have state authorization to practice. The national registry EMT is a private certifying organisation. The various state offices serve as the state licensing agencies. Certification by the national registry is a distinct process from licensure and serves the purpose of identifying for the public, state licensure agencies and employers individuals that have successfully completed the registry’s educational requirements as well as demonstrating their skills and abilities in the mandated exams.

National Registry EMT Summary

Before the national registry EMT was formed by President Lyndon Johnson’s recommendation in 1970 there were many thousands of people in the US each year that were permanently disabled due to the mishandling by poorly trained ambulance and emergency personnel. It was deemed that the patient was being mistreated twice, once by the injury or illness and once by failing to receive competent emergency care. This all fortunately changed once the new organisation was formed.

It took a number of years to really be efficient, but today if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being in need of emergency treatment you can feel rest assured that the level of service that you will get will be excellent. Since the 1970’s, pre-hospital emergency medical care has continually evolved and improved. The EMT has been acknowledged as an important member of the health care team. Excellent training programs have been developed and a vital focus has been placed on continuing education. High standards have truly been established. It all has helped that ambulance equipment essentials are set, national accreditation or paramedic programs have been achieved, and professional associations for the EMT have been organised. Without obtaining a licence through the national registry a person will not be able to perform any type of EMT job. You will need to study very hard, pass exams provided by the organisation before becoming qualified.

These stringent tests are certainly for the benefit of the public, knowing that the person who will be treating them in an emergency situation are fully trained and qualified to do so. The exams are difficult and extensive designed in a way to allow candidates to be tested whether they are ready for the job by testing not only their theoretical knowledge in performing emergency help but probably more importantly their practical skills including providing CPR to save a person’s life. With the National registry EMT being a highly critical organisation within the medical industry it would be very difficult to assess whether a candidate is ready to take on duties and responsibilities of an EMT worker without the organisation being in place.

We are all very aware how crucial the role of an EMT is and it should not be assigned to just any individual who wants it. Thanks to the national registry we can all be happy that this certainly is the case. The lives of many people on a daily basis will depend upon the services and assistance provided by a qualified EMT affiliated to the national registry.

In this day and age getting and education in an area that you are interested in has become a whole lot easier. For example, it is now possible to get EMT training online, although this is, of course, only the theory side of the course. The point is, however, that you will be in a position to get the training you desire without the constraints of time and distance to hold you back. Read further to find if online EMT training is what is right for you.

Learning To Be An EMT Online

To apply for any Emergency Medical Technician course you will have to:

Comply with the minimum age requirement in your state (which is usually 18 years of age, but in some states it is lower).

Be in a physical state that allows you to lift heavy loads and engage in all of the physical requirements of an Emergency Medical Technician.

Have good eyesight, and if you have bad eyesight, it will need to be sufficiently corrected either with glasses, surgery, or contacted lenses.

Have a valid driving license.

Have at the very minimum a high school diploma.

If you decide to do your EMT training online you will be preparing yourself to:

Provide life-saving procedures to people who have been involved in accidents and to assist them in dealing with their injuries, illnesses and traumas when such events occur outside of a hospital setting.

You will need to pass an exam that is in line with the requirements of the particular state in which you would like to work once you are qualified, and you will have to do a certain amount of practical work in order to sufficiently qualify as an emergency medical technician.

In order to become an EMT you will need to complete the online course within the time specified by the particular course that you are taking part in. Usually the time that you will have to complete the course is something like 110 hours. If you look at the coursework and suspect that you may be unable to complete it in the specified time, then you may want to reconsider your career choice.

Advantages Of EMT Training Online

There are several very convincing advantages to doing a portion of your online EMT training. The best advantages are the following:

Time is flexible. You will be able to adjust your study schedule to suit your needs. Many people are blocked from studying further due to the fact that they have to work as well as study as they have no other means to support themselves. This is not always possible as many employers are not very understanding of a student’s needs. With an online course you can study when it suits you and when you can find time for it.

You will not have to quit the job you already have. This is related to the previous point. If you are able to study at any time and fit your studies in around a full-time job then you won’t have to sacrifice the work you already have just to enter EMT training for a future job. This is great as you do not want to burn bridges with your current employer and you will be able to continue maintaining yourself.

You will be able to study at your own speed. That is perhaps one of the best advantages. Were you to take classes in a traditional face-to-face situation, you may find that the lecturer moves at a pace that is too fast for you and does not review the areas that you struggle with the most. Likewise you may find that the classroom pace is too slow and that you are able to move at a much faster speed through the coursework when you study by yourself. As long as you are able to properly manage your time, then doing your EMT classes online will make it easier for you to work at a speed that suits you best.

Related to the previous point is the idea that you will be able to devote the time necessary to the aspects of the work that you are struggling with the most. You will be able to keep your focus on the areas that need the most attention, and not waste time and effort reviewing work that you are already sufficiently familiar with.

Unlike classroom programs, you will be able to study for qualification in a state other than the one you live in. this is an important advantage of EMT certification online because different states have different requirements for practicing as an EMT in that particular state. If you are planning to relocate as soon as you qualify then you will not have to retake the test or catch-up any missed points in order to work in a different state.

If you need to be re-certified you will be able to do this from your own home and without having to deal with any face-to-face situations at any point.

What You Get With An Online EMT Program

When you decide to do your online EMT courses you will find that the lessons are laid out in the following ways:

The lessons will be web based (as implied by the fact that it is an online course), making it a lot easier to study in your own time and at your own pace. You will not be tied down by work constraints and distance problems.

The lessons will be self-paced. This means that you will be able to complete the course work at your own speed. You will not be tied down by slow students and neither will you be outpaced by students who are quicker than you are. Rather you will control the speed at which you work.

Such resources as podcasts and videos will be used in order for you to get a clear understanding of the life-saving techniques and skills in which you will have to be well-versed in order to be an efficient EMT.

With an online EMT course you will learn about:

Human anatomy

Human physiology

General pharmacology

Medical terminology

How to respond to asthma attacks

How to respond to heart attacks

How to respond to overdoses

How to respond to strokes

How to respond to choking

What to do in the case of a pregnant woman giving birth unexpectedly

How to lift patients

How to move patients

How to identify and check vital signs

What to do in the case of airway obstructions

How to administer CPR

How to set fractures

How to stop bleeding

How to use medical equipment (such as backboards and oxygen masks) that are related to the profession of being an EMT

How to administer oral medication

How to administer intravenous medication

How to administer and record EKG information

How to intubate patient

How to administer oxygen

How to use suction devices

Is An Online Program Enough?

Something that is essential for you to remember is that EMT online training will only provide you with the theory side of the training. If you want to become an EMT then you will need to also do some practical training at some point. This should be obvious. You cannot learn how to use the appropriate machinery in the appropriate way if you are only learning online. There has to be some practical and real-life input if you are to be a qualified and effective EMT.

Things to remember when considering an Online EMT Training Program

You will have to engage in some practical work in order to get the hand-on experienced required to qualify s an EMT.

You should only do EMT training online with programs that meet the standards as they are laid out by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians(NREMT).

Some courses are only refresher courses for students who already hold an EMT qualification, so make sure that you are choosing an online EMT certification course that suits you and that will get you the qualifications that you are particularly aiming to get.

Some courses may expect you to re-take the entrance exam even if you have previously passed it for another EMT qualification, so be aware of this when applying.

As long as you keep in mind that an online EMT course is not where your training ends, then feel free to embark along this route. There are a large number of advantages to doing EMT training online, and it will allow you to open up your career options and broaden your horizons without compromising your current job. Many of the online courses will also provide you with the information and opportunities necessary to complete the practical training which means that you may be in the position to do all of your training in more or less one place. As health related industries are the ones that are growing the fastest in terms of job opportunities and job security, you will find that this is a very stable career on which to embark, and you will not regret your decision to do EMT training online.

There are a number of EMT programs in Louisiana that are well worth considering for any student who would like to enter the emergency medical services in this state. There are often subtle as well as obvious differences in terms of state requirements for EMTs. Consequently, it is necessary for you to research the requirements in your particular state before embarking on any training in this regard. For example, in Louisiana, you can enter training at the tender age of 17, while in other states you have to be 18, and sometimes even 19, years old before you are permitted to work towards this qualification.

Louisiana State Requirements For Becoming An EMT

Basic EMT State Requirements

The first requirement involved in becoming a basic EMT in Louisiana is that you complete a Louisiana Bureau of EMS-approved training program based on the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic curriculum. According to braintrack.com, you need to meet the following requirements before you will be admitted to such a program:

You must be 17 years of age to enter a program

You must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) or be state certified as a First Responder prior to starting the course

High school students should be enrolled in good standing with their high school

You must take a Bureau of EMS-approved standardized proficiency exam and demonstrate an eighth grade reading level

Along with proof that you have completed an accredited program, you must also provide a transcript from a doctor stating that you are in good health and therefore able to perform your duties as an EMT adequately and without putting the lives of you or your patients at risk. This assessment must be performed within 6 months prior to application. Although you can enter an EMT training program at 17, you must be at least 18 years old to take the National Registry exam to receive Louisiana State Certification. This consists of both a practical as well as a written examination.

Intermediate EMT State Requirements

To become an EMT at Intermediate level in Louisiana you must begin by completing a Louisiana Bureau of EMS-approved training program based on the Emergency Medical Technician 1984 curriculum.

Note: You will be unable to enroll in such a program if you were previously dismissed from a similar program for any reason other than simply failing the program academically within the last two years. In addition, you will not successfully pass the program if you attend less than 90% of the training hours offered.

Although there are some exceptions, you will also need to be a National Registered EMT Basic and State Certified EMT-Basic before you can become an Intermediate EMT in Louisiana. If you have a criminal record for any reason it is unlikely that you will be able to receive certification at this level, except under very rare circumstances. While EMT-Basics only need to read at 8th grade level in Louisiana, EMT-Intermediate’s must be able to read at 10th grade level if they are to be accepted into the industry. Proof from a doctor that you are free from communicable diseases and that you have received all of the necessary immunizations is also required if you are to be certified at this level. Last, but not least, you must receive National Registry Certification and Louisiana State Certification.

Choosing A Program

There are a number of considerations to keep in mind when it comes to selecting EMT programs in Louisiana as there are a fair number to choose from. Your final decision depends heavily on what you are looking for in a school. Some of the schools listed below have, for example, a stronger focus on the emergency medical services than others. This often implies that the education offered will be more comprehensive and that the qualification will be taken more seriously. Schools that fall into this category include South Louisiana Community College, Delgado Community College, and Bossier Parish Community College. However, there are also other factors involved in selecting a school. If, for example, you specifically want to attend a school with a diverse student body, you should consider enrolling at Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana Tech Alexandria, Nunez Community College, or NTC. If you are an adult learner who would feel more comfortable around other adult learners, you should consider applying at Southern University at Shreveport and Bossier Parish Community College. And if you would prefer to attend a school that has small class sizes, you should consider South Central Louisiana Technical College, NTC, Louisiana Tech Alexandria, and Delgado Community College.

Certification And Examination

In order to become certified as an EMT in Louisiana you must first complete a Department of Transportation approved EMT or Paramedic course prior to taking the National Registry Exam for Emergency Medical Technicians. This exam is both computer-based as well as practical, meaning that your theory knowledge and your clinical skills will be tapped before you will become certified. To become certified you must provide proof that you have passed this examination. In addition you will need to provide your current NREMT card.

Preparing for the examination is essential. This involves doing online revision, but also involves becoming familiar with computer based testing as there is no longer a ‘pen and paper’ option available. The EMT National Data Training Base has thousands of questions for you to use while you practice for your examination. This can be found by visiting http://www.emt-national-training.com/louisiana-emt.php. What is particularly helpful about this resource is that it not only provides questions for you to use as you practice, but it also provides all of the answers as well as explanations regarding why one answer is correct while another, similar, answer is incorrect. If possible, form a study group with other EMT students who are also in the process of preparing for the examination as this will greatly improve your efficacy.

Major Private Employers Of EMTs in Louisiana

There are two main private employers of EMT professionals in the state of Louisiana. They are American Medical Response, located in New Orleans, and Priority Mobile Health, located in Terrytown. In addition to these employers, of course, you will also have the opportunity to work for hospitals and ambulatory care units across the state. The following are examples of non-private employers you could work for as an EMT in Louisiana:

Charity Hospital of Louisiana (Hospital)

Louisiana State University (Hospital)

Ochsner Medical Center (Hospital)

University Hospital (Hospital)

Acadian Ambulance Services Incorporated (Ambulance Service)

American Medical Response (Ambulance Service)

Balentine Ambulance Services (Ambulance Service)

Lifeline-West Calcasieu (Ambulance Service)

Med Life Ambulance (Ambulance Service)

Alexandria Fire Department (Fire Department)

Bossier City Fire Department (Fire Department)

Eastbank Consolidated Fire Department (Fire Department)

Fire Protection Dist 4 (Fire Department)

Lake Charles Fire Department (Fire Department)

Monroe Fire Department (Fire Department)

Violet Fire Department (Fire Department)

Wards 1 and 2 Fire Protection (Fire Department

Not only are there many EMT programs in Louisiana to choose from, but there are also many different employment opportunities available to a prospective student in the emergency medical services once they have graduated from their program. This makes it an extremely sensible career option. It must be noted that not all students are good at taking exams. If you are a student of this kind, you may wish to consider engaging in additional training and examination preparation in order to be well prepared for certification. This will often cost you more money, but in the long run it is certainly worth the time and expenditure.

There are a number of EMT programs in Wyoming available for anyone who is interested in entering the emergency medical services in that state. The Wyoming Department of Health is a good place to begin when looking for the ideal program for you to attend. When selecting a program it is important that you broaden your options and compare as many different programs as possible against your personally established criteria. Once you have looked at the school in detail, you should apply for at least three different schools in order to improve your chances of being accepted. Once you are accepted at the various programs you have applied for, you will then need to make a more refined decision regarding which one is the best one for you to attend.

EMT Training In Wyoming

Requirements

EMTs in Wyoming must meet the following requirements:

They must have completed an EMT training program

They must possess either a BLS Healthcare Provider CPR card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card

In order to enter an EMT training program in this state there are additional requirements that you will need to meet:

You must be able to pass a criminal history check

You must be able to pass a drug screen

You must be at least 18 years of age

You must have a GED or high school diploma

In order to become certified at the EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic level, trainees must already have their certification as an EMT-Basic.

Programs

EMT programs in Wyoming are usually offered through community colleges and technical schools, but organizations like the EMS Office at the Wyoming Department of Health as well as local medical centers and EMS providers may also provide EMT training to individuals interested in entering the profession. It is extremely important to note that all EMT programs in Wyoming must be approved by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), which accredits only those schools that adhere to the National Standard Curriculum. If the program is not approved, there is no point in attending it. If you are from another state and would like to become an EMT in Wyoming, you will be able to do so if you present a current certification card from your out-of-state training.

Classroom Instruction

Although being an emergency medical technician is an extremely practical and hands-on line of work, the majority of an EMT training program occurs in a classroom environment. Courses include:

Information about dealing with a variety of emergency situations

Information about dealing with bleeding

Information about dealing with wounds

Information about dealing with transporting injured victims

Information about dealing with childbirth

Information about dealing with restricted airways

If you want to advance your career in this line of work there are a number of advanced skills that you will need to learn:

You will learn how to perform Endotracheal intubations

You will learn how to administer medications

You will learn how to read electrocardiograms (EKGs

Clinicals

Part of your EMT training will involve clinical training. This essentially means that you will need to spend a set amount of time in the field shadowing experts in the EMT profession who are well aware of what they are doing. The more advanced the qualification within the emergency medical services that you are striving to attain, the more clinical and field experience you will have the opportunity to engage in. however, at the more basic levels, your clinical exposure may be somewhat limited. If you are presented with any additional opportunities to engage in field work, take them. The more experience you gain during your training, the better prepared you will be when you actually start working as an EMT. Although classroom learning is extremely important, clinical training is as valuable. Some people consider it to be more valuable in preparing you for your job, so this dimension of your training cannot be ignored and must be taken seriously.

Licensure

In Wyoming you will be required to write the state-approved test for official Wyoming EMT certification. To do this:

You must send in documentation from their training in order to receive approval to take the exam

You must take the NREMT exam to become officially licensed

The NREMT exam consists of the following dimensions:

A cognitive, question-based section

A psychomotor portion where test-takers need to demonstrate their skills firsthand

You will need to become recertified once every two years by taking a test at the EMS Office in Cheyenne.

How To Become An EMT in Wyoming

There are five basic steps involved in becoming an EMT in Wyoming:

The first step entails looking closely at your options of EMT training courses by visiting the Wyoming Department of Health’s website. This website is mentioned in the references at the end of this article. This is the most comprehensive source of information available to help you make your decision about EMT programs in Wyoming. The site has a list of training courses in various locations throughout the state, including at Emergency Medical Service (EMS) facilities and medical centers. You can’t apply on the website as the system requires you to express interest by physically contacting a course coordinator.

Once your application has been accepted you simply need to enroll in an EMT training course at your desired location. According to ehow.com you will learn how to “respond to various medical situations like poisoning, bleeding, seizures, choking, difficulty breathing and heart attacks”. In short you will be provided with the skills necessary for intervening in emergency medical situations.

In order to complete the course and become an EMT you will need to meet the entire course requirements involved. This includes attending the compulsory 120 hours of intense training that you will need to complete in order to be an effective and skillful EMT. All EMT programs in Wyoming are developed in such a way that you will learn everything you need to know in the time provided.

Once you have actually completed your training you will need to prepare for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician exam. The National Registry’s website has practice tests on their site to help you prepare for the exam. In Wyoming you will not be able to be an EMT unless you take and pass the required examination.

That means that the last step involves passing the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician examination to become certified. The test is computer based.

If you want to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and are looking for EMT programs in South Carolina then you are in luck, as there are many facilities that offer EMT Courses. There are various qualifications for EMTs, such as the EMT-Basic program, Certificate Programs, Associate’s Degree Programs, and refresher training programs.

Emergency medical technicians provide emergency care to the critically injured at the scene of an emergency and en route to a medical facility. A 911 operator typically dispatches paramedics and EMTs to an emergency scene, where they will often work with fire department personnel and/or police. Once on the scene the EMT will determine the nature and extent of the patient’s condition and attempt to ascertain whether the patient has any pre-existing medical conditions. Appropriate emergency medical care is given and the patient is transported to the nearest medical facility when possible.

Requirements For EMT Programs In South Carolina

In order to enrol in the EMT-Basic program an applicant must meet the following criteria:

Be at least 18 years of age before course completion

Be a high school graduate or possess a high school equivalency (GED)

Be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT

Some schools may also require applicants to do a standardized test to check their reading comprehension and math skills.

Does One Need EMT Experience To Become A Paramedic?

Schools differ in their requirements. Typically, one does not need to have EMT experience in order to enrol in a paramedic-training program, but South Carolina does require that paramedic students be certified as an EMT prior to enrolling into a paramedic program. There are so many EMT programs in South Carolina that it really makes sense to do even an EMT-Basic course prior to attempting a paramedic course, and in South Carolina, a NREMT-B certification will likely suffice.

Types Of EMT Courses Offered In South Carolina

EMT programs in South Carolina essentially consist of:

Emergency Medical Technician (Basic)

This is the most basic EMT course offered to individuals wishing to become emergency medical technicians in South Carolina. This 200-hour program should take approximately six months to complete if done on a part-time basis. South Carolina adheres to the current U.S. Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) curriculum for EMT Basic. Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry Examination.

Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) Internet-Based With Lab

These EMT programs in South Carolina cover the same material as the classroom-based EMT Basic course but utilize Internet technology for some of the instruction. Students must do weekly assignments and attend one evening of lab session s per month for six months. Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry Examination.

EMT Refresher

The Refresher course aims to allow you to update your knowledge and practical skills and qualify to take the recertification-licensing exam. The course includes 24 core hours of training, an additional 48 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and 8 hours of CPR training, which meets current curriculum mandates.

EMT Paramedic Associate Degree

EMTs can take this advanced program. Applicants are required to certify as an EMT prior to enrolling, have the required CPR certification, and some schools require applicants to have completed an anatomy and physiology course, and even an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification. An EMT-Paramedic course typically provides a mixture of classroom and in-hospital clinical experience, as well as some field experience.

The Paramedic NREMT Exam

All graduates from EMT programs in South Carolina must take and pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam in order to become certified. The NREMT examination is both a skills test (psychomotor examination) as well as a computer adaptive test (cognitive examination).

Psychomotor Examination

The psychomotor examination that forms part of the NREMT consists of 12 separate skills presented in a scenario-type format to gauge the abilities of the EMT-Paramedic to function in an out-of-hospital setting. Individuals taking the examination may bring their own equipment, provided it is approved for testing by the National Registry Representative in attendance at the examination.

This portion of the paramedic NREMT exam is designed to test one’s competency and knowledge in the following skills:

Cardiac Management Skills

IV and Medication Skills

Oral Station

Patient Assessment-Trauma

Pediatric Skills

Random Basic Skills

Ventilatory Management

Cognitive Examination

The cognitive examination portion of the NREMT will cover the entire spectrum of EMS care.
This includes:

Airway

Ventilation

Oxygenation

Trauma

Cardiology

Medical

EMS Operations

The maximum amount of time you have to pass this portion of the exam is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

EMT Programs In South Carolina

The following are some of the various offerings of EMT programs in South Carolina, including some information regarding program requirements, degree options, and courses.
EMT Basic Courses

Midlands Technical College

Because there are subtle differences between states regarding the rules and regulations governing EMTs, it is very important that you consider only EMT programs in New York when looking for a school. By attending a school in the state where you would like to be qualified, you are increasing your chances of automatically meeting the majority of the state requirements for New York. New York offers several training colleges for EMTs. In addition it is also one of the states that offer more private employment opportunities than most others.

Choosing A Program

EMT programs in New York can differ considerably, and consequently there are a variety of factors to take into account when selecting the best program for you. For one thing, some of the schools listed here have a stronger emphasis on EMT training than others. This carries with it the implication that these schools may be better options in terms of receiving adequate EMT training. If this is one of your primary concerns, you should definitely consider attending the following schools over others:

Manhattan Community College

La Guardia Community College

Monroe Community College

Rockland Community College

However, this is not the only consideration to take into account as there are a number of schools in New York that do not primarily focus on training for the emergency medical services, but which are still excellent options offering very good EMT programs. If, for example, you are particularly interested in attending a school with great student body diversity, the best options for you to look into may well be La Guardia Community College, Manhattan Community College, Rockland Community College, and Westchester Community College. Some students begin college late and are considered to be adult learners. If you are in this position you should consider attending Westchester Community College, Monroe Community College, or Duchess Community College as these are schools with many adult learners enrolled. This means that you will be among students in a similar position to yourself. It also implies that these schools may be better equipped for coping with your specific educational needs and may even account for the busy schedule that many adult learners have. If you are interested in attending a school that has geographic diversity (in other words, is located out of state), La Guardia Community College, Herkimer County Community College, and Corning Community College are good options to consider. Many students have to live on campus as well as study there. In New York, MVCC Utica and Monroe Community College are good options to consider if you need to attend a residential campus.

List Of EMT Programs In New York

EMT Certification Classes In New York With Certificate Information

In order to get a clearer understanding of what EMT programs in New York actually offer, we will now consider two of the more popular schools and the courses that they offer.

CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College’s EMT Certification Programs

CUNY (City University of New York) offers excellent training options for the emergency medical students. At the moment about 22,000 students representing 155 different countries across the world are enrolled at this school.

Emergency Medical Care Course

Although most states allow you to become an EMT once you have completed the NREMT certification exam (which certifies EMTs at a national level), New York requires students to take a state certification examination. This is called the New York State Emergency Medical Technical Certification Examination and the Emergency Medical Care Course offered by CUNY allows you to sit for this exam. The primary skill that this course will teach you is:

The assessment and treatment of emergency injuries and illnesses in pre-hospital settings

This course can be taken independently, or it can serve as a prerequisite course for the paramedic program offered by the university.

Associate In Applied Science In Paramedics

This is a two-year program that prepares you to be a paramedic, one step up from simply being an EMT in New York. This degree consists of the following coursework:

Human anatomy and physiology

Trauma assessment

The treatment of head and neck injuries

You will gain knowledge by engaging in three internships that involve rotations in:

The city morgue

Hospital emergency rooms

A paramedic advanced life support ambulance

Monroe Community College’s EMT Certification Programs

This two year college has about 19,000 students currently enrolled. It has three tracks, namely emergency medical services (EMS) management, basic-level emergency medicine or paramedic training.

Emergency Medical Services Certificate

This is a course which prepares prospective EMTs for taking the EMT-Basic examination. The coursework that you will cover during this training program includes:

General EMT training

Hazardous materials

Early defibrillation

Patient assessment

Emergency operations

Pediatrics

Trauma management

Airway management

Associate In Applied Science In Emergency Medical Services – Paramedicine

This is a substantially more intensive course as it requires 66 credits, 42 of which must be paramedic training course credits. Before a student can even enroll in this program, he or she must already have EMT certification as this is, in fact, a degree that leads to a paramedic qualification. Coursework includes:

Assessment and prioritization of multiple trauma patients

Techniques to manage cardiac or respiratory emergencies

In order to successfully complete the program you will have to meet all of the coursework requirements as well as engaging in clinical education and fieldwork.

There are a number of topics that you will study over the duration of this course, including:

Advanced pediatric care

Paramedic-level medicine

Surgical airway techniques

Chest decompression

Special immobilization techniques

There are a number of additional skills that you will also pick up over the course of your training, such as how to work in a team, how to interpret 12-lead electrocardiograph (EKG) machines and how to handle incidents involving hazardous materials and incident management. Completion of this program qualifies graduates to sit for the New York State certification exam for paramedics.

Major Private Employers Of EMTs In New York

There are a number of private employers that hire EMTs in the state of New York. They include Arista Car & Limousine LTD, located in New York City, Dial Car, located in Brooklyn, Rural Metro Inc, located in Rochester, 1-800-Cityride, located in Long Island City, We Care Inc, located in Buffalo, Hunter Ambulette Ambulance, located in Inwood, D & J Ambulette Svc, located in Bronx, Alamo Ambulance Svc, located in Poughkeepsie, XYZ Two Way Radio Inc, located in Brooklyn, Bynum Yorktown Taxi, located in Peekskill, Classic Executive Limousine, located in Long Island City, Brentwood Legion Ambulance Svc, located in Brentwood, Bravo Volunteer Ambulance Svc, located in Brooklyn, New Harlem Car Svc Inc, located in New York, All City Radio Taxi Assn Inc, located in Bronx, Audubon Car & Limousine Svc, located in New York, Skyline Credit Ride Inc, located in Long Island City, Ben’s Car & Limousine, located in Long Island City, and Prime Time Transportation Inc, located in Long Island City.

Although there are a number of considerations to keep in mind, it is clear that New York offers a variety of opportunities for future EMTs. In fact, in comparison to other industries in the state, emergency medical services is certainly one of the better options with which to become involved. Technological improvements mean that there are more and more procedures that can be performed at the scene of a medical emergency. Consequently, EMTs and other emergency respondents are becoming increasingly more important in terms of saving lives and giving the health care industry in general a good name.

There are a number of emergency medical technician refresher courses available across the country, and it is important that you are aware of the options in your state and city long before it comes time to meet your continuing education requirements. Refresher courses are also extremely useful in cases where EMTs are seeking re-certification after a break from working in the field. Even if there is no pressing practical reason to complete a refresher course, it will improve your basic knowledge and will increase your chances of finding employment within the emergency medical services.

What Is Emergency Medical Technician Refresher Training?

There are two main purposes for refresher course training:

Firstly it allows individuals to renew their certification and therefore continue working as EMTs

Secondly it ensures that all of the knowledge that you possess on the subject is up to date and that you are fully equipped to continue being a successful EMT in the field

Different states may have slightly different rules for EMT re-certification, but there tends to be refresher courses available in all states for those EMTs who want to renew their license or who simply want to expand their knowledge.

Expired Certification

As an EMT it is your responsibility to keep up with when your certification will expire. Remember that it can take a while to receive re-certification, so it is very important that you plan ahead. If your certification is due to expire within 9 months, you should immediately enroll in a refresher course. If you do not there may be a period of time in between expiration of your certification and renewal of your certification in which you will not be allowed to work or volunteer as an EMT. Clearly this is a state of affairs that should be avoided.

Requirements

There are a number of requirements that you will need to meet in order to enroll in a refresher course of this nature. It is firstly interesting to note that there are several different types of EMTs:

Medical first responders

EMT Basics

Intermediate technicians

EMT-Intermediate

EMT Paramedic

As you move up the chain your responsibilities and roles become more and more complex. Each of these levels in the emergency medical services has its own distinct set of requirements that must be met before you can enroll in a refresher course for that qualification.

The rules are different for different states. As an example we will look at the refresher requirements for Wisconsin below.

Medical First Responder

The most basic level of emergency medical care is to be a medical first responder. In order to become re-certified as a medical first responder you will need to have:

A current healthcare provider CPR certification

Completed a 18 hour First Responder Refresher course in the current biennium

If you meet these basic requirements you will considered to be re-certified. You can also complete refresher courses to improve your skills. There are three course types that you can take which will allow you to become re-certified:

An approved First Responder course

An approved EMT-Basic course

An approved EMT-Basic Refresher course

EMT Basic

The refresher requirements for EMT-Basic also require that you have a current CPR certificate. In addition you need to complete one of the following:

An approved 30 hour EMT-Basic Refresher course in the current biennium

Approved Alternate Refresher requirements in the current biennium

The courses that you can complete in order to meet the refresher requirements at this level of emergency medical services are the EMT-Basic course, the EMT-Intermediate Technician course, or the didactic portion of the EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic courses. Completing any of these will allow you to say that you have met the refresher requirements.

EMT-Intermediate Technician

The requirements here are very similar to the above mentioned options. Firstly you need to hold current CPR certification if you want to be re-certified at this level. In addition you will also need to have completed an approved course lasting 30 hours or one of the approved alternate refresher requirements that that are available. Both must be completed in the current biennium which spans from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012. In addition to these basic requirements you will also need to show that you have completed either a department approved 12 hour EMT-Intermediate Technician refresher course or 12 hours of medical director approved continuing education.

EMT-Intermediate

According to dhs.wisconsin.gov the following is required in order to be re-certified at this level of the emergency medical health care services in Wisconsin:

“Current healthcare provider CPR certification, AND

Current ACLS certification, AND

Completion of a Department approved 48 hour EMT-Paramedic Refresher course OR 48 hours of medical director approved continuing education at the EMT-Intermediate level of training and scope of practice in the current biennium”

EMT-Paramedic

Completing an EMT-Paramedic course will allow you to be re-certified at this level. The other requirements are essentially the same as those needed to refresh your knowledge at EMT-Paramedic level. In other words you will need to hold current CPR certification as well as current ACLS certification. In addition you will need to complete a refresher course or meet the requirements a medical director approved continuing education course at EMT-Paramedic level.

These are the requirements for the state of Wisconsin. Other states may have very similar requirements, but it is your responsibility to ensure that you have a full understanding of what those requirements are.

Many schools that offer initial training also offer refresher courses, so your original school or program coordinator is a good place to start looking.

Being certain that you meet the eligibility requirements to enroll in an emergency medical technician refresher course is the first hurdle that you must overcome on your path to becoming re-certified or to improving your level of knowledge in the field. Potential employers are more inclined to hire those EMTs who have shown that they are dedicated to the profession by choosing to complete refresher courses. It will also leave you feeling more confident in your job. The best EMT positions tend to go to EMTs who stand out from the crowd. Completing refresher training in the field will help you be one of those EMTs.

Considerations

When looking into EMT programs in Florida you may come across a number of online options. If you do you need to be very careful about enrolling in these programs, no matter how convenient they may seem. This is because, in order to be an EMT. You will need to complete two main sections of coursework. These sections include:

Classroom training, or theory work

Practical hands-on experience in and actual medical environment

The second cannot possibly be completed entirely online. Consequently it is wiser to focus on those EMT programs in Florida that offer face-to-face tuition as these are the schools most likely to provide you with comprehensive hands-on training.

There are online schools that are ‘safe’ to attend if you want to be an EMT. These tend to be schools that are either part of a brick and mortar school or that are affiliated with one. If you attend one of these schools there will probably be measures in place to ensure that you are adequate trained in clinical settings. In addition there are online schools that are affiliated with an organization that allows you to intern and complete your practical training through them. You could also consider making your own plans and sourcing your own organization through which to do your clinical training. This, however, may take a great deal of your time and energy. In addition it is not always easy to find an internship on your own, whereas employers are more likely to accept interns form schools that they have already heard of and that have a good reputation with that organization.

Although there are a number of good online schools out there, there are also some that are not ideal for someone who wants to be a quality EMT. The decision that you make regarding your choice between the many EMT programs in Florida is a very important one to make because there are many employers that take your school to heart when considering you for a job. Consequently a qualification from a less-than-reputable school could seriously impact your chances of receiving employment with the organizations and agencies that you would most like to be employed with. In short this is a decision requiring a great deal of time and attention.

Of the many EMT programs in Florida there are clearly those that will be better than others. When considering programs you need to compare the amount of money charged for the program with the quality of the tuition on offer. In addition you need to look into the facts and figures regarding how many students successfully graduate from the program and in turn how many of those students successfully find work in the domain of social work. These facts and figures are on hand and are necessary for comprehensive research into a school’s attributed and suitability. There may also be a number of personal factors that play a role in your decision.
